Cozy OSR Design Summary 1

There are 4 character attributes:
-Fastness
-Mettle
-Coin
-Pack

Fastness is effectively a damage reduction. It ranges from 0 to 3.

Mettle is similar to HP. It starts as a die value (between d4 and d12), which is rolled to get starting Mettle Points.

Coin measures a character's long-term wealth. It can be expended mid-adventure to activate special abilities and spent to purchase cozy upgrades to the character's home and future. It range from 0 to 3 at character creation.

Pack is the number of items a character can carry. It ranges from (1) to (4 + 2 heavy slots).

These values are generated by rolling 3d6 in order on the following table.

  Fastness Mettle Coin Pack
3 0 d4 0 1
4 0 d4 0 2
5 0 d4 1 2
6 0 d6 1 2
7 1 d6 1 2
8 1 d6 1 3
9 1 d8 1 3
10 1 d8 1 3+1h
11 1 d8 2 3+1h
12 2 d8 2 3+1h
13 2 d10 2 3+1h
14 2 d10 2 4+1h
15 2 d10 3 4+1h
16 2 d10 3 4+2h
17 2 d12 3 4+2h
18 3 d12 3 4+2h

Upon rolling for Mettle, players should stop to roll their Mettle Die and generate their initial Mettle Points.

Players can switch two 3d6 results with each other. If they switch Mettle, they will re-roll Mettle Points with the new Mettle Die.

Additional character creation steps are in development, including the character's House, which will provide special abilities and gear options. So far I've got things like The House with the Big Library, The House with the Best Tea, and The House of All the Cats. I'm working on getting just the right number and balance. One idea here is that if two characters roll the same house, they both live there together, however they wish that to mean.

Gameplay rules are still in development, and are currently a mix of Cairn and 24XX. A lot of auto-hits, break items, and more of a focus on providing a solid structure for Rulings rather than granular detail rules.

One thing I am playing with is bringing a bit of All Outta Bubblegum/Lasers and Feelings into this. That Mettle Die/Mettle Points is calling to me, saying "Roll Mettle Die under current Mettle Points to succeed at doing something brave!"

I'm going to play around with that a bit. I like the dynamic of it being harder to do a difficult thing as your Mettle diminishes. I'm not sure how to delineate between auto-hit and roll-for situations for this particular game, but it's still in the early going!

When a character reaches 0 Mettle, they can no longer do brave things, except by sacrificing items to helps their friends out of a tight spot. Beyond that, they are ineffective at venturing forward and will retire from adventuring as soon as they return home.

Sometimes character will find treasure on their adventures, but they can only take what they can carry. I imagine character will want to keep some as future adventure gear and some of trophies. The rest are converted to Coin.

Coin can be spent on lifestyle upgrades, such as adding features to their house, throwing themselves a big birthday party every year, or raising a family.

More to come and more to do!

Thank you for being awesome and good luck in all things!
