Cozy OSR Design Summary 2

I got a little caught-up on the task resolution system, and I still am, but I've put that on the back-burner to work on the other parts I can accomplish.

I'd originally planned to create 12 houses (for the characters to live in), which they'd determine by rolling a d12. However, I bounced the ideas I had off some trusty individuals and they all said the same thing: "What about [this kind of house]?"

So, I'm leaving a lot of room for creativity there. I've whittled the number of base houses down to 6, which will be determined by a character creation roll of a d6. I feel this is a good path forward for two big reasons:
1) it leaves room for players and GMs to create more of their own houses
2) it increases the likelihood of two players having characters that co-habitate AND "found family" is a major trope in the cozy fantasy genre.

And so, without further ado, here's my rough draft of the 6 Houses

The House with All the Little Animals
-What kinds of animals live with you in your house?
-A few animals follow you on your adventures (they’re immune to harm, beyond maybe a minor fright)
-Gain 1 Pack slot for something you think the animals would like you to bring home
-Spend 1 Coin for the animals to be able to help with a task beyond your reach once per adventure

The House with the Best Library
-How have you upgraded your library to make it even better?
-You always have a clean journal with plenty of blank pages and a working writing instrument
-Gain 1 Pack slot to carry up to 5 documents you find on your adventures
-Spend 1 Coin to have brought a relevant book with you once per adventure

The House of Arts and Crafts
-What kind of arts and crafts does your house have all the supplies, tools and space for?
-You wear a garment or bring an accessory of your own design with you on every adventure
-Gain 1 Pack slot for an art piece or craft supply you find on your adventure
-Spend 1 Coin to have brought a tool or supply (adze, ball of yarn) with you once per adventure

The Newcomer’s House
-What do people say the previous owner of your house used to be most notably for?
-You always bring something of the previous owner’s that you’d like to get rid of
-Gain 1 Pack slot for something you think would help make your house feel your own
-Spend 1 Coin to have brought something no one would expect once per adventure

The House with Every Kind of Tea
-What is the rarest, most prized variety of tea in your cupboard?
-You always have a flask of tea you made just before heading out
-Gain 1 Pack slot for any tea ingredients or tea set you find on your adventure
-Spend 1 Coin to have brought everything you need to make an impromptu pot of tea

The Curio House
-What is your favorite collection?
-You always have some mysterious oddity with you you’re trying to figure out
-Gain 1 Pack slot for strange little odds and ends you find on your adventure
-Spend 1 Coin to have something you think might have come from here once per adventure

This has also allowed me to upcycle some of the other houses I'd been thinking of. One of the big character goals is to find treasure. If you're finding treasure, you need something to spend it on. So, I'm working on some ways characters can spend their Coin on cozy lifestyle upgrades. I want the list to suffice on its own, but also be useful as a rule-of-thumb for other goals the players might dream up.

I still haven't done Coin values for these. This is just a very rough idea of what I'm getting after.

Lifestyle Expenditures

You throw an annual party that most of the village looks forward to: 10 Coin

Settle down and start a family

Turn your house into a bed and breakfast

Cultivate the loveliest garden

Upgrade your kitchen and hone your skills to become the best baker

Add a music/art studio and become proficient

Host a club

Make your house the nicest house in the village (everyone thinks so)

Outfit home for napping (best blankets, pillows, beds, sofas, chairs, hidden rooms, etc)

Fireplace and chimney upgrade

I need to complete work on these parts, continue testing task resolution, and work on the following parts of my to-do list:

Equipment (a list of items to act as inspiration, but also provide scale for what constitutes 1 Pack slot and 1 H Pack slot)

Treasures (a big ol' list of wonderous and fanciful things a character may chance upon during their adventures)

Trouble Directory (a selection of troubles the characters may face on an adventure, and how they might bother them)

Cozy Guidelines for GMs and Players (general direction, helpful examples, where to look for inspiration)

That's all for now.

Thank you for being awesome and good luck in all things!
